Chronic sinusitis is a long-term problem, often characterized as that when someone has acute sinusitis four or more times in a year.

How Common Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is one of the most common medical problems. It is believed to affect more than 37 million Americans per year and it affects 30% of the population at some point in their life. This number has still been increasing over the past years.

What Causes Sinusitis?

Sinusitis will usually develop after a cold or an infection. Other potential causes of sinusitis include allergies, viruses, irritants such as smoking, or even some kind of an injury or structure abnormality.

What Are the Signs of Sinusitis?

Some of the signs of sinusitis include:

  • Nasal discharge
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Facial pain
  • Coughing
  • Lessened sense of smell
  • Green and yellow mucus
  • Fever
  • Irritated throat

How Will the Doctor Diagnose Sinusitis?

The doctor will look at the symptoms you’re currently afflicted with and also the results that come from examination. You’ll undergo a head and neck examination and if needed, a nasal endoscopy.

What Can I Do to Treat Sinusitis?

Some of the things we recommend you do include the following:

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Use warm compresses to relieve pain and use steam or warm air to alleviate sinus congestion.
  • Take antibiotics, decongestants, or painkillers.
  • Visit your local sinus center.

What Advanced Treatments Are There for Sinusitis?

Detroit Sinus Center offers two different advanced options to treat sinusitis. These are balloon sinuplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery.

When Are the Advanced Treatment Options Necessary?

Advanced treatment options may be needed if a patient has chronic sinusitis with persistent symptoms even after normal treatment methods. If a patient doesn’t improve with normal treatment, advanced treatment is an excellent option.
