How to Stay Sinusitis-Free in 2017

At Detroit Sinus Center, we specialize in sinusitis treatments in Allen Park, Southfield, and Detroit, Michigan. However, as effective as our treatments are, the best way to treat a sinus infection is, of course, by not getting one in the first place! As your trusted Detroit sinus doctor, we want to give you a few tips for how to stay sinusitis-free in the new year.

Wash Your Hands Often

Most infections are generally spread from touching someone who’s infected or even just touching something that an infected person had previously touched. This can especially be problematic because many of these germs can live on surfaces for hours after a sick person has touched it. Over time, these germs may accidentally infect your body through the touching of your eyes, nose, or mouth. Make sure to wash or sanitize your hands often to prevent this from happening.

Get a Yearly Flu Shot

While flu shots are obviously helpful for preventing the flu, they may also prevent you from getting a sinus infection. Make sure to do this yearly as new flu strains develop each year.

Avoid Pollutants and Irritants

Irritants and pollutants such as cigar or cigarette smoke can trigger inflammation and irritation in your nasal passages. When this happens, you’re more susceptible to developing a sinus infection. In addition to smoking, you might want to avoid pet dander, dust, and cleaning agents. These can cause irritations in your nasal passages as well.

Use a Humidifier

Dryness can tend to lead to sinus pain or infections. Using a humidifier will increase moisture in a room and keep your sinuses from becoming too dry. Also, remember to keep your humidifier clean on a regular basis so that it doesn’t unintentionally cause any additional problems.

Stay in Good Overall Health

When you’re in good shape, you’re less likely to develop illnesses. When you’re not, you have a higher chance of developing a sinus infection or other kinds of sicknesses. We recommend getting a good amount of sleep, exercising regularly, eating a well-balanced diet consisting of plenty of fruits and vegetables, and taking vitamins.
